Made In Delco: Bevan’s Candy

For nearly 60 year’s Bevan’s Own Make Candy on Baltimore Pike has been a Delaware County landmark. If you grew up near Media chances are you had a Bevan’s chocolate easter egg in your basket or an old style molasses from your grandmothers house after Thanksgiving dinner.

Bevan’s still makes candy the way Marty Bevan made it back in in 1959. Hand crank machines and copper kettles are the most recent technology in this candy kitchen.  In front a small storefront features shelves of candy that was made just feet away.  The glass cases and shelves are filled with all of the candy goodness of an old style candy store. No Reese’s Cups or M & M’s here.

Randy Bevan, has taken over the family business and is carrying on his grandfather’s candy making legacy.  But Randy will be quick to correct you if you say “home made”. It’s “own make” not home made.  Candy selections vary depending on the time of year.
