Dining Delco: Zac’s Burgers

Dining Delco: Zac’s Burgers

Everyone has their favorite burger spot. This is one near the top of my list. And chances
are, if you grew up in Delaware County, Zac’s Burgers is on your list as well.
The place is like an old pair of socks you never throw away. Never fancy. Always
I remember sinking my teeth into my first burger at Zac’s original Crum Lynne location
on Chester Pike in 1987. I think I ate there twice a week while escaping out of high
school for lunch. The place hasn’t changed since it opened in 1984 and blossomed into
a mini burger empire. Zac’s now has locations in Aston, Folsom and Havertown. I hear
they may be re-opening up another site in Media in 2014.
I’ve been to every location several times and the same word comes to mind.
Consistency. The familiar puck shaped patties of fresh ground sizzle on the grill eagerly
awaiting a warm toasty roll.
Their trademark burgers are juicy but not messy. Buns toasted to perfection. And
fixings stacked on like you would at a backyard barbecue.
Although Zac’s has a well rounded menu of salads, sandwiches and wings, I go for 2
reasons. The Bacon Zac’s Double Cheeseburger ($3.79) and their hand dipped
milkshakes. ($2.49 small and $4.49 for a regular). Most of the time I devour my first
burger and then order a second. That gives my stomach a few minutes to prepare for
another round. Zac’s french fries ($2.19) are also the real deal. Thick, crispy and not
too greasy. And the best part: huge portions. I prefer Zac’s regular fries over their
Waffle or Sweet Potato fries but I’m a traditionalist.
I did notice they’ve added wings to their menu so on a recent visit to the Folsom location
I tried something new and they didn’t disappoint. I tried the Honey Garlic Soy wings (10
for $8.99) which were probably some of the best wings I’ve had in a long time. Meaty
and very tasty.
You can’t get better comfort food Delco style. Just like that old pair of socks. Some
things never go out of style.
